Finalist Project – IDEC 2-Week Student Design Competition
Paleo Place was created for a two-week IDEC student design competition, where I was selected as a finalist from my studio class. The design challenge focused on creating an intergenerational space that fostered connection and engagement across age groups.
My concept centered on a greenhouse experience that harmonized interactions between youth and elders through an immersive, interactive exhibit. The project was located on an existing parking lot at Belmont University, adjacent to a senior living facility. The goal was to create a shared space where college students could volunteer, helping residents navigate a virtual exhibit via an app that explored the lives and culture of the Paleo people—ancient Indigenous communities native to the Nashville area.
The design emphasized improving the mental health and well-being of older adults, particularly those living in senior care facilities. Biophilic design principles were incorporated throughout the space to enhance connection to nature, including a greenhouse pathway, interactive plant installations, and a group fitness area. All spaces were fully ADA-compliant, ensuring accessibility for all users.
